Arthur Russell

Arthur Russell, American cellist, composer, singer and disco artist from New York wasn't prominent during his lifetime (1951 - 1992), but a series of reissues and compilations raised his profile in the 2000s. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa and studied the cello and began writing his own music. When he was 18, he moved to San Francisco and studied Indian Music and played with Alan Ginsberg. In '73 he moved to New York. He formed a band there called The Flying Hearts, then in 1979 began writing disco music under the name Dinosaur and Loose Joints. He died from AIDS at the age 40.
Russell was prolific, but was also notorious for leaving songs unfinished and continually revising his music. Ernie Brooks said that Russell "never arrived at a completed version of anything," while Peter Gordon stated, "his quest wasn't really to do a finished product but more to do with exploring his different ways of working musically". He left behind more than 1,000 tapes when he died, 40 of them different mixes of one song. (Wikipedia).
Arthur: "I said to him the thing that excited me about the piece was that you could pick up the needle anywhere and put it down and it always sounded the same. Not exactly the same, but you could plug into it for as long as you liked, then plug out and then plug back in again without losing anything essential unlike narrative music where your attention is required from beginning to end. I was just introduced to this Canadian band called City and Colour. I'm liking what I hear so far! Dallas Green (get city and colour) stays in a small range in most of his songs, but his voice is incredible.

I'm getting my eyes and ears opened to a world of undiscovered hip hop thanks to my friend who I'm hoping to drop some hip hop/acoustic tracks with. It's going to be iiiilllll.

Girls

I saw Girls the other night at the Fillmore. Really small turn out, so therefore really chill and intimate. They're an indie "beach boy" punk local San Francisco group. I'm in love with them. They played a lot of new stuff from their upcoming album set to release in a month. The songs sounded more mellower and soulful.

B.T.W. For those of you who knew my plans for my lower back, I did it! First out of 2 maybe 3 sessions. It's amazing! It was incredibly painful but it is better than i could imagine. Savoy Books is a British press that has been publishing counterculture materials since the '80s. They did a bunch of apocalyptic comic books surrounding Lord Horror, a character who traversed horrific landscapes, picking through mind-poppingly graphic holocausts on a kind of existential quest. Savoy also did a bunch of dance tracks and brutal covers, including a vinyl reading corner with P.J. Proby.

I found out about Savoy through my friend Johanna Constantine, who was studying in Leeds in 1990 and had stumbled upon these guys in Manchester. At the time, the Savoy offices and printing press were constantly being raided and shut down by the local police. With Johanna as our DJ, "Shoot Yer Load" became one of the defining anthems at our club, Blacklips at Pyramid, in 1992. The track, released as a 12" in 1989, was ferocious, blending perfectly withSPK, Kim Fowley, Divine, The Flirts, Princess Tinymeat, and Rozz Williams-era Christian Death. It would be several more years before Lil' Kim would start to graze the lyric territory that Savoy defined here, but she never came close to "Shoot Yer Load" in terms of pure refreshment. Rowetta from the Happy Mondays was the session vocalist for this track, and she sounds incredible. Meng and Ecker are the names of two characters in the Savoy comic books.

Pink Floyd

I went and saw Australian Pink Floyd last night at the Fillmore. Cranky old farts in the crowd, but amazing sounds, visuals, and probably some contact high. They were impressive. They sounded just like them. Very precise and tight, with no distracting personality or costumes or even much facial expression. They were strictly a cover band doing Pink Floyd the best way possible. It's the closest to the real thing I will probably ever get to. Makes me appreciate my pops, sitting me down and playing records from his day, explaining to me the culture and movement of that generation. I really credit him for my perspective on how music has evolved through the ages. Check out this documentary on the group.

Neon Indian, Miniature Tigers, and Prefuse 73

Went to see Neon Indian last night at the Mezzanine. Amazing, dancing was constant, even during their slower songs. It's the kind of music that you not only hear and see, but feel. Lots of amazing skills with the electronics. But with some live instruments included, which I like. I've got a new crush! The hottie guitar player! Deadbeat Summer is a love from while ago, but Neon Indian remain a consistent source of retro, synth, pop, warm, easy, trance, kick ass music. What a great night!






Also that night, Miniature Tigers





and Prefuse 73 who were also very fun and a little more interesting to dance to. Going to be listening to them a lot more now.
